Papers : of John Hannah Daniel, 1863, 1921-1971 (bulk 1921-1971).

Over 2/3s of the collection consists of political papers from Daniel's terms as Virginia delegate, 1943-1970. These include correspondence and other papers generated by his service on the Virginia Advisory Legislative Council Committee on Water Resources, the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Commission, the Advisory Council on the Virginia Economy, and the Virginia House of Delegates Appropriations Committee. There are papers about Charlotte County politics and local elections, particularly the 1969 House race in which he was defeated. With these are election petitions, declarations of candidacy, and party honor pledges. Of interest are many papers from the school desegregation fight in Prince Edward Co., part of Daniel's 22nd district, and the eventual establishment of the Prince Edward School Foundation to build a private segregated academy. With the political section are papers from Daniel's membership on the board of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the College of William and Mary Board Visitors. Daniel's general correspondence is divided between family papers and business papers. The latter contains correspondence, memos, orders, and financial statements, and accounts of the John H. Daniel Co. of Knoxville, Tenn., a men's clothing manufacturer, and Virginia Crafts, a chenille producer. Upheavals in the industry caused by changing tastes can be traced in the latter papers. Routine family correspondence, much of it dealing with the family home "Arcadia," completes the collection. Correspondents include Watkins Moorman Abbitt, Colgate Whitehead Darden, Fred Pollard, Absalom Willis Robertson, Thomas Bahnson Stanley, William Munford, and Joseph Barrye Wall, editor and publisher of the Farmville Herald.
